Monitoring Enzymatic Transformation with NMR: Tracking Alanine Racemase Conversion of Substrate Chirality
An interview with Monique Chanhuot (Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, France) whose research interests include investigating enzymatic changes at a local scale using NMR. This interview discusses Chanhuot’s work with chiral liquid crystals in NMR to track changes in alanine chirality driven by alanine racemes. It is hoped that observations of chiral switching enzymatic activity using this method will help in the development of targeted and relevant antibiotics. MORE »

Ion Mobility Spectrometry: Solo or Coupled to Mass Spectrometry
Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a method for the separation of ions, which, as an analytical technique, has been applied for environmental monitoring, rapid security screening, and characterization of high mass biomolecular ions. In this column, we review the basics of IMS, describe field asymmetric ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS), and discuss coupling FAIMS with mass spectrometry in an instrument that produces higher-dimensional data useful for the analysis of complex mixtures. An Integrated Risk Assessment for Analytical Instruments and Computerized Laboratory Systems
A risk assessment is presented for determining the amount of qualification and validation work required to show that instruments and computerized laboratory systems are fit for their intended purpose. Risk management is one of the new requirements for the pharmaceutical industry following the publication of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) "Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for the 21st Century" and the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) Q9 on Quality Risk Management. How to Select an ICP-MS System: Some Important Considerations
This article presents a set of evaluation guidelines — developed from the author's 20 years of experience demonstrating inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and ICP–mass spectrometry (MS) instrumentation and running customer samples — to help laboratory scientists make the right decision when selecting an ICP-MS instrument. It focuses on the evaluation process and the most important factors to consider rather than on how to compare the analytical performance of the instruments being evaluated. MORE »
