Phyllis Brown: A Story of Serendipity, Perseverance, Vision, and Chromatography
In the 1960s, Phyllis Brown dared to do what few chromatographers did: to apply high performance liquid chromatography — then still in its infancy — to real samples, particularly complicated ones like blood. In a new interview, Brown talks about what it was like to be a chromatography pioneer, and how she figured out what she had to do to get recognition in a male-dominated field.

Editors' Series: Turning up The Heat: Optimizing Temperature in Liquid Chromatography
Tuesday, November 27, 2012
9:00 AM EST; 15:00 (GMT + 1)
The use of high temperature in HPLC is very limited because of a general feeling that;

• Stationary phases are not stable at elevated temperatures.
• Compounds will thermally degrade at elevated temperatures.
This presentation will demonstrate that by using high temperatures effectively these pre-conceptions can be addressed and also introduce the chromatographer into a world of unforeseen benefits.

Editors' Series: Gas Chromatography with Single- and Triple-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry: Principles, Potential, Limitations, and Applications
Tuesday, November 27, 2012
11:00 AM EST
In this web seminar, we will describe and critically compare the use of comprehensive two-dimensional (2D) gas chromatography (GC×GC) with a single-quadrupole mass spectrometer (MS), against one-dimensional GC in combination with a triple-quadrupole (QQQ) mass spectrometry instrument. The benefits and disadvantages of each methodology will be discussed, illustrated by examples from the field of food analysis. Also, the combination of GC×GC with a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer will be discussed, along with a series of significant applications. The emphasis will not only be devoted to the potential of GC×GC-QQQ MS, but also to the following question: Does such a combination make sense?
