My Own March Madness — Four Dissertations, Analytical Chemistry, and Chemical Education
With four graduate students completing their doctoral dissertations at the same time has created a sort of "analytical chemistry March madness" for professor and blogger Kevin Schug. And the research of these "final four" is certainly worth watching.  More...

Chromolith® High Resolution Column
Revolutionary monolithic silica columns are a single rod of high purity monolithic silica instead of particles. A unique bimodal pore structure gives greatly improved chromatographic performance. This leads mainly to improved separation efficiency and column back-pressure and allows for faster flow rates, considerably reducing the analysis time while enhancing the lifetime. Learn more

Analysis of Intact Human Insulin and 5 Analogs in Human Plasma
This work provides a single, simple method for the simultaneous, direct quantification of intact human insulin and multiple insulin analogs in human plasma, achieving LODs of 50 to 200 pg/mL for each. This study takes advantage of mixed-mode solid-phase extraction (SPE) and a high-efficiency, solid-core particle column that contains a low-level positive surface charge to eliminate interferences while facilitating high sensitivity quantification. More...

Editors’ Series: Investigating the Potential Impact of Hydraulic Fracturing on Private Well Water Quality
Thursday, May 8, 2014 8:00 am PDT/ 10:00 AM CDT/ 11:00 AM EDT
Until now, limited studies have been performed regarding the environmental impact of hydraulic fracturing for harvesting natural gas. In this seminar, Kevin Schug discusses the suite of analytical methods (including headspace-GC, GC-MS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, total organic carbon, and ion chromatography methods) his team developed to evaluate the quality of private well water in proximity to natural gas extraction sites. This talk will report on the results of their studies to date, future plans, and the opportunity presented by his baseline studies of future fracking sites.
