Spectroscopy Spotlight
Lasers are used for a wide range of industrial, medical, spectroscopic, and military applications. Daniel Kazal, a graduate research assistant in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, has developed a novel technique for channeling sound using a tube-shaped laser beam that forms a thermal gradient. Based on his work with this approach, he received the 2017 FACSS Innovation Award. We recently spoke with him about this research. This interview is part of a series of interviews with the winners of awards presented at SciX. read more

Depth profiling of a Nicotine patch by Raman microscopy
Transdermal patches have multiple layers: the release liner, the adhesive, the membrane, and the backing. It is important to understand the composition of a patch to perform quality control, make product improvements, and to monitor drug release. Traditional methods of analysis are destructive, requiring extraction or cross-sectioning. This application note shows how confocal Raman microscopy examines product layers without sample destruction.

Quiz
Your latest interpretation problem is shown in the figure presented in this quiz. Using what you have learned from the January installment of "IR Spectral Interpretation Workshop" and previous columns, determine the functional groups present from the spectrum given, and try to discover the chemical structure of this compound. Remember that the inclusion of a peak position in the table does not necessarily mean it will be useful in the structure determination. read more
