Application of the Agilent 7900 ICP-MS with Method Automation Function for the Routine Determination of Trace Metallic Components in Food CRMs

This application note describes the use of the Agilent 7900 ICP-MS, running a method developed using the Method Automation software function in ICP-MS MassHunter Software, for trace elemental analysis of fish certified reference materials (CRMs). The Method Wizard selects the most appropriate operating conditions (plasma mode and tuning conditions), analyte isotopes, integration times, cell gas modes, and internal standards, based on the current instrument configuration and the composition of the user’s own reference sample, which is measured as part of the method setup.

Determination of P, Si, and S in Acid Digested Lubricating Oil Using the Agilent 8800 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS

A new method is described for the accurate determination of silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur in lubricating oil samples using an Agilent 8800 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ). An optimized oxygen (O2) mass-shift method provided limits of detection for 28Si, 31P, 32S, and 34S of 0.25, 0.01, 0.18, and 0.75 ppb, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination of Si, P, and S in a lubricating oil standard reference material NIST 1848. Recoveries in the sample digests ranged from 96.4–103%.

Accurate Determination of Sulfur in Biodiesel Using Isotope Dilution-Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ID-ICP-QQQ)

A new method is described for the determination of S in organic matrices using an Agilent 8800 ICP-QQQ operating in MS-MS mode. Interferences on S were eliminated by reacting the analyte ions with O2 and measuring the isotope-specific SO+ product ions at M + 16 amu. ICP-QQQ is able to provide enhanced interference reduction for both 32S and 34S for isotope dilution purposes by utilizing MS-MS mode. The new MS-MS method is successfully applied to the S determination in a biodiesel reference material.
