Insurers move to protect Medigap policies

One often-cited way to reduce Medicare outlays is to make all beneficiaries pay at least some coinsurance on health care services. Last year's health reform legislation took a small step in this direction, and now a Senate bill seeks to prohibit Medigap policies from covering the first $550 in health care costs as a way to make seniors more cost-conscious. Study's conclusions questioned

The June 2011 Commonwealth Fund issue brief, “Assessing the Financial Health of Medicaid Managed Care Plans and the Quality of Patient Care They Provide,” examines how publicly traded health plans differ from non–publicly traded ones in terms of administrative expenses, quality of care, and financial stability. BCBS of Michigan builds up its medical homes

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) has designated roughly 2,500 physicians in 770 practices across the state as patient-centered medical homes (PCMH), a 28% increase from the 1,800 designated PCMH physicians in 2010. BCBSM says it has built the nation's largest patient-centered medical home program. Read full article.

Online Medicaid and CHIP applications analyzed

A new analysis released by the Kaiser Family Foundation's Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured provides an overview of online applications for Medicaid and/or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
