Detection and Identification of Gulf Oil Dispersants (COREXIT® 9527 and 9500) by GC/MS and LC/MS/MS
Sky Countryman, Matthew Trass, Seyed Sadjadi, and Jeff Layne, Phenomenex

In an effort to contain the largest oil spill in United States history, nearly a million gallons of dispersant have been pumped into the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, very little is known about the impact of these dispersants on humans, wildlife, and the environment. In this technical note we show how GC/MS with Zebron™ ZB-WAXPLUS™ GC columns can be used to detect COREXIT 9527 directly from seawater. To improve GC/MS stability, a cleanup procedure using the Strata™-X-A sorbent is used to virtually eliminate matrix interferences.

Agilent 1260 Infinity SFC/MS Solution
Melissa Dunkle, Gerd Vanhoenacker, Frank David, and Pat Sandra Research Institute for Chromatography and Martin Vollmer, Agilent Technologies

The applicability of Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) can be substantially enhanced by coupling SFC to Mass Spectrometric detection (MSD). In this Technical Overview, two instrument configurations are described that can be used to connect the Agilent 1260 Infinity Analytical SFC to a mass spectrometer either using an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) or an electrospray (ESI) source.

High Speed Analysis of Pesticides
Dr. Silvia Marten and Mareike Naguschewski, KNAUER, Germany

This application note describes a very fast gradient HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of nine pesticides commonly used in agriculture. The high speed and reliability of this method using the KNAUER PLATINblue HPLC/UHPLC system make it well-suited for routine analysis. Reduction of analysis time to less than 2 min is achieved by employing BlueOrchid C18 column with 1.8 µm particles.

Improved LC/MS/MS Analysis of Gabapentin in Plasma using a Kinetex® 2.6 µm Core-Shell C18 Column following Protein Precipitation
Matthew Trass, Jeff Layne, & Phillip J. Koerner, Phenomenex

A simple and fast method for the analysis of gabapentin in plasma has been developed over the concentration range 0.5 to 25 μg/mL, which covers the commonly accepted therapeutic levels in patient samples. The LC/MS/MS analysis of gabapentin in plasma is achieved in less than 2 minutes using a Kinetex core-shell column following protein precipitation for sample clean up.

ACQUITY UPLC I-Class: Maximizing the Performance of a Bioanalysis Assay with a Low-Carryover Autosampler
Paul Rainville and Joanne Mather, Waters Corporation

This work demonstrates the extremely low carryover characteristics of the Waters ACQUITY UPLC® I-Class System, which important for maximizing the performance of bioanalytical assays of low-exposure medicines.

Automated Extraction and Cleanup of Toxaphene in Soils, Sediment and Fish
Phillip Bassignani, FMS, Inc.

Toxaphene does not occur naturally in the environment. It is widely found in the environment, mainly as a result of past releases to air, water, and soil through its use as a pesticide. The forms of toxaphene commonly found in the environment are a gas in the atmosphere, a solid in soils and sediment, and in surface and groundwater. Toxaphene found near hazardous waste sites is usually a solid.
