Identification of Metabolites from Maropitant Using a Dual-Pressure Linear Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer and Mass Frontier Software
By Rose Herbold1, Yingying Huang1, and David Nakamura2 1Thermo Fisher Scientific, San Jose, CA, USA; 2Elan Pharmaceuticals, South San Francisco, CA, USA
The application note demonstrates the combination of the Velos Pro dual-pressure linear ion trap and Mass Frontier software is a powerful solution for metabolite identification and structural elucidation. Fragment Ion Search (FISh) is novel tool that utilizes the fragment ions generated from the parent structure to identify metabolites and localize the site of biotransformation. |

Quantitation & Identification of PPCP in Water
Andre Schreiber, Rolf Kern, AB SCIEX
LC-MS/MS is able to analyze polar, semi-volatile, and thermally labile compounds covering a wide molecular weight range. In addition, state-of the-art LC-MS/MS instruments operated in selective Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) mode, offer unmatched selectivity and sensitivity to quantify PPCP reproducibly at trace levels without time consuming and extensive sample preparation The method presented for analyzing 80 EDC and PPCP compounds using LC-MS/MS is a straight forward approach for the analysis and identification of these compounds with excellent sensitivity and ruggedness. |
HPLC Assay of Vitamins
Suparerk Tukkeeree, Dionex, part of Thermo Fisher Scientific
This note describes conventional and UHPLC approaches to assaying the vitamin content of a dry syrup. The Dionex Acclaim PA2 column successfully analyzed a sample from 100% aqueous to 100% organic solvent, thereby allowing water- and fat-soluble vitamins to be separated in a single analysis, which was facilitated by the Dionex UltiMate 3000 system and Chromeleon software by allowing multiple injections during the same run. |
Rapid Analysis of Hops Acids in Beer using Strata™-X Solid Phase Extraction and Kinetex® 2.6 µm Core-Shell Technology HPLC Colum
Philip J. Koerner, Matthew Trass, and Jeff Layne, Phenomenex
An improved HPLC analysis for iso-alpha hop acids in beer is demonstrated using the Kinetex 2.6 μm core-shell column, resulting in improved peak shape, easier quantitation, and reduced analysis times. Sample cleanup using Strata-X can also remove many potential interferences in the beer matrix, resulting in cleaner samples for HPLC analysis. |
SEC-UV-RI-MALS ANALYSIS OF PROTEIN AGGREGATES
Judith Vajda, Tosoh Bioscience
Size exclusion chromatography with UV detection is a standard technique for quantifying soluble protein aggregates. Light scattering detection can provide valuable additional information. This application note provides some advice to optimize SEC-MALS analysis of proteins. |
Hydroxyethyl Starch Characterization by Light Scattering
Wyatt Technology
Hydroxyethylstarches (HES) are used increasingly as plasma expanders in medical applications. By coupling FFF technology to a Multi Angle Light Scattering (MALS) detector, absolute values can be determined without making any assumptions. |

Automated One Step Extraction, Cleanup and Concentration for PBDEs in Soil
Phillip Bassignani, FMS, Inc.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers are organobromine compounds that are used as flame retardants. Like other brominated flame retardants, PBDEs have been used in a wide array of products, including building materials, electronics, furnishings, motor vehicles, airplanes, plastics, polyurethane foams, and textiles. The health hazards of these chemicals have attracted increasing scrutiny. This application note demonstrates the efficiency of automated extraction, multicolumn sample cleanup and concentration for low levels of these compounds. |
A Flexible SPE/LC/MS/MS Platform for the Simultaneous Quantitation of Multiple Amyloid Peptides in Cerebrospinal Fluid
Mary E. Lame, Erin E. Chambers, and Diane M. Diehl, Waters Corporation
In this application, the LC/MS/MS platform is coupled with selective sample preparation for the simultaneous quantitation of multiple aβ peptides. This work focuses on methods for the 1-38, 1-40, and 1-42 aβ peptides, in support of preclinical studies. |

Organophosphorus Pesticides in Apple Matrix by GC/MS/FPD
Kenneth Lynam and Doris Smith
The Agilent J&W DB-35ms Ultra Inert column effectively resolved the analytes of interest producing excellent peak shape for even the more problematic organophosphorus (OP) pesticides. The detection limits for most of the pesticides were 15-25 ng/mL. |
Improved High Temperature Simulated Distillation (ASTM D6352 and D7169) Using Zebron™ ZB-1XT SimDist Metal GC Columns
Kory Kelly, Sky Countryman, Chris Fernandez, and Ngoc Nguyen, Phenomenex
An improved method for high temperature simulated distillation based upon ASTM D7169 is presented using the Zebron ZB-1XT SimDist column. This column utilizes a Glass Infusion™ Technology that results in more improved efficiency, resolution, and unmatched column-to-column reproducibility. This technology also allows simulated distillation methods, such as ASTM D6352 and D7169, to be extended from C100 to C120 while still meeting all the system suitability requirements. |
The Determination of Organotins in Water Using Triple Quadrupole GC-MS/MS
Inge de Dobbeleer, Joachim Gummersbach, Hans-Joachim Huebschmann, Anton Mayer, Thermo Fisher Scientific
The European Union Water Framework Directive seeks to lower detection and reporting limits for many contaminants, including organotins. This application note describes the ability of the Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum XLS system , with the use of timed selected reaction monitoring (t-SRM), to exceed the EU Water Framework Directive requirements for the detection and quantization of organotins. |

HPAE-PAD Determination of Infant Formula Sialic Acids
Deanna Hurum, Dionex, part of Thermo Fisher Scientific
This note describes the accurate determination of sialic acids in infant formulas by HPAE-PAD using the Dionex CarboPac PA20 column following acid hydrolysis and maltodextrin removal using one of two sample-preparation methods. The HPAE-PAD technique provides reliable determination of sialic acids in acid-hydrolyzed infant formula samples without sample derivatization. |
