Lead Story
Gaussian peak shapes in chromatography are indicative of a well-behaved system. Such peak shapes are highly desirable from the perspective of column packing technology. Here, we discuss a number of approaches for peak shape measurement that are available in modern chromatography software, along with their advantages and drawbacks. A new "total peak shape analysis" approach is suggested that facilitates detection and quantification of concurrent fronting and tailing in peaks. Several remediation approaches are proposed that can help chromatographers analyze and improve peak shapes. read more

The last decade has witnessed how liquid chromatography columns and instruments changed from long bulky columns with relatively large fully porous particles operated at modest pressures (100–200 bar), to short compact columns with small superficially porous particles operated at ultrahigh pressures (1200–1500 bar). This (r)evolution has resulted in a tremendous increase in achievable separation performance or decrease in analysis time but requires a good knowledge of optimal chromatographic conditions for each separation problem and, concomitant, the right instrument configuration. read more
We have entered a new stage in the era of accelerations. Moore’s law continues its expansion, increasing exponentially the computer power available. Other accelerations are remarkable, particularly easy access to cloud computing and the expansion and influence of artificial intelligence to practically all sectors of our society. read more |

Application Note
This application note outlines a simple SPE procedure for the extraction of 26 diverse per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in drinking water using UCT’s polymeric weak-anion exchange SPE cartridges (ENVIRO-CLEAN® WAX). Instrumental analysis was carried out by LC-MS/MS in less than 10 minutes using a Selectra® C18 HPLC column. Overall, excellent recovery and reproducibility were obtained at the low concentrations tested. / Learn more / |
