The LCGC Blog: A Disconnect Between Science Research and Science Education Research
By experimenting with new techniques such as content-intensive collaborative learning, Kevin Schug has found success in improving the way science is taught — and has the student results to prove it. But the science education world doesn't seem interested it hearing about it.
Looking to Eliminate Problems associated with Sample Preparation?
Although automating analytical techniques has become status quo, sample preparation is still considered to be the bottleneck of the laboratories processes. Learn how automation can reduce labor and time, increase recoveries and produce consistent, reproducible results. If this and cutting sample preparation costs is important to your laboratory review the new From Sample to Vial Automated Sample Prep Solutions notebook.

News: Digital Microfluidics Enables Analysis of Mutiple Steroid Hormones in Core-Needle Biopsy Samples
Steroid hormone testing in the clinic relies on immunoassays or liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS–MS) analysis of blood or urine samples, but there are cases where it is necessary to analyze tissue, such as in the case of hormone sensitive breast cancers. Researchers from the University of Toronto in Canada have developed a novel approach using digital microfluidics to analyze multiple steroid hormones in small tissue samples (1–10 mg) collected using core-needle biopsy (CNB) sampling.

An Improved GC–MS Method for Cigarette Smoke Characterization Using a Novel Cold Trap, Dual Column, and Cryofocusing System
The development of a novel trapping system and a modified GC–MS layout (using dual chromatographic columns and cryogenic focusing devices) has enabled a major improvement in the chromatographic separation of volatile and semivolatile compounds in cigarette smoke. This improvement has led to the potential for identifying compounds that are usually masked by the solvent peak.
