The LCGC Blog: Buffer Choice for HPLC Separations
This month's blog takes a look at the topic of buffer choice for HPLC separations. It discusses why mobile-phase pH is important, how to the choose the correct buffer type and concentration, and how to avoid variability in retention and selectivity. It also includes useful information about how to add a buffer to a mobile phase that contains an organic component, how to measure buffers, and other factors to consider when working with buffers. More...

Detect Trace Metal Contaminants
Agilent's high-productivity ICP-MS, ICP-OES, MP-AES, and AA instruments let your lab routinely achieve significantly lower limits of detection (LOD) for trace and heavy-metal contaminants while complying with all relevant regulatory standards for environmental waters. U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Proposes New Quality Standards for Food Chemical Codex 9th Edition
The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) (Maryland, USA) has proposed new quality standards, or monographs, in its Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) 9th Edition for Spirulina, Brilliant Black PN, and pomegranate juice.

Spirulina is dried out cyanobacteria, Arthospira platensis. It has high protein content and is widely found in specialty food bars, powdered nutritional drinks, popcorn, fruit, and fruit juices. The newly proposed USP monograph provides a test for the presence of microcystin toxins that can cause severe liver damage. The presence of microcystins can indicate adulteration of the product. More...

Market Profile: Continuous Flow Analysis and Discrete Analyzers
In continuous flow analysis (CFA), a sample is injected into a flowing carrier solution passing rapidly through small-bore tubing. The sample is mixed with a reagent, which reacts with the sample to develop a color and determine the sample concentration. The use of carefully controlled flow conditions ensures that the color development reaction is reproducible, so that the color measurement need not wait until the reaction has gone to completion. More...
