Zachary S. Breitbach, the 2018 winner of the LCGC Emerging Leader in Chromatography award, is a senior scientist at AbbVie. He has already made important contributions to both HPLC and GC. In GC, he played a fundamental role in the development of highly thermally stable, high viscosity ionic liquids as new GC stationary phases. In HPLC, his work covers enantiomeric separations, HILIC), ultrafast and high efficiency separations, supercritical and subcritical fluid separations, and more. Here, he discusses how his career got started, his goals for the future, and other topics. Read more

The LCGC Blog
The overriding majority of articles on problems with the technical transfer of HPLC methods ultimately focus on differences between HPLC dwell volumes. However, as the title suggests, there are many more issues which can cause problems in the transfer of HPLC methods, and I wanted to highlight some common issues that come across my desk, in the hope that it will help you avoid these problems in your own practice.

Is that peak “pure”? How do I know if there might be something hiding under there? In part I of this series, we explore some of the concepts behind peak purity assessments, describe some tools that are used in commercially available software for these assessments, and highlight some of the limitations of these tools using real-world examples. New Q-sep extraction salts from Restek make an easy technique even simpler. Our new, improved design provides the salts in a more granular form, so they flow freely and are easier to pour than powders. The convenient slim packets are easy to open and fit perfectly into extraction tubes, ensuring complete transfer without any spills. These new extraction salts offer the same technical performance you've come to expect from the Q-sep line of QuEChERS products, just redesigned for your convenience. Keep your workflow running smoothly with new Q-sep extraction salts from Restek! Learn more
Despite the theoretical promise of reduced plate heights (h) < 1, most modern UHPLC columns can only deliver plate heights in the range from 1.4 to 2.5. However, improved packing procedures, a better understanding of the colloidal properties of particle suspensions, and the study of the rheological behavior of packed beds and the final bed structure should lead us to practical solutions that can double the column efficiencies. Here, a procedure is described for preparing polydisperse polymer standards to validate the accuracy of any SEC method for aqueous or organic mobile phases. This approach can be used for all calibration procedures with the exception of online light scattering and viscometric detection. Read more
