Metabolomics in Natural Product Analysis
Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and needs to be protected from changing climate conditions as much as possible. Amanda Kowalsick and Albert Robbat of the Department of Chemistry at Tufts University, in Medford, Massachusetts, are working to understand how vulnerable the metabolites in tea are to climate conditions. They recently spoke to LCGC about their work with tea and natural products. |

Analysis of Shipwrecked Beer
Beer from a 1840s shipwreck in the Baltic Sea has been analyzed by a team of scientists at the VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland. Using a variety of chromatography techniques — including gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC) coupled to MS — the team compared the beer with modern-day varieties and found they were not too dissimilar. |
