Featured Application Note:
Automated Characterization and QC of Proteins
By Christian Albers, Laura Main, Carsten Baessmann, Wolfgang Jabs

Bruker
A push button solution, the new BioPharma Compass generates high-quality, accurate data for the rapid characterization of biopharmaceutical products such as proteins, peptides, RNA and DNA.

Hyphenated
Anabolic Steroid Analysis for Anti-Doping Control
Jitka Zrostlikova and Tomas Kovalczuk, LECO

Validated to WADA criteria, methods using LECO’s Pegasus 4D GCxGC-TOFMS were successfully applied to sterol analysis. This application note evaluates system performance, detectability and reliable Mass Spectral confirmation at low ppb concentrations. For more information contact LECO.
Metabolomics Strategies Using GC-MS/MS Technology
Lena Fragner, Hans-Joachim Huebschmann, Wolfram Weckwerth, Thermo Fisher Scientific

This application note details the overall strategy of combining full scan MS-analyses of metabolites and targeted analysis to develop a highly sensitive and selective method for the detection and quantification of metabolites using triple stage quadrupole GC-MS/MS-MRM-technology

Quantification of Inhalation Drugs in Dried Blood Spots
Suma Ramagiri, Mauro Aiello & Hesham Ghobarah, AB SCIEX

Dried blood spot analysis (DBS) offers advantages for the reduction of sampling volume and simplification of sample handling and storage. At the same time, it presents new bioanalytical challenges. Advanced technology in both hardware and software offers new solutions to these challenges. The high sensitivity and dynamic range of the QTRAP® 5500 system, combined with UHPLC chromatography makes DBS analysis of inhalation drugs feasible.
Physicochemical characterization of a therapeutic protein by peptide mapping, SEC and IEX
Srividya Kailasam; Jochen Strassner, Martin Vollmer, Agilent Technologies, P.M. Sundaram, Bharathi Sriram GangaGen Biotechnologies

Sensitive and rapid LC methods were developed on the new Agilent 1260 Bio-inert LC system to characterize the therapeutic protein, P128. Optimized peptide mapping with sub-2-µm column technology, size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and ion exchange chromatography (IEX) were performed, to increase separation efficiency for the detection of potential impurities in therapeutic protein preparation.
Sensitive Neurotransmitter Analysis
Hendrik-Jan Brouwer, Nico Reinhoud, Lusi van Heerwaarden, Martin Eysberg, Antec

For utmost sensitivity in Neurotransmitter analysis, Antec provides dedicated ALEXYS™ Analyzers for monoamines and metabolites, acetylcholine, GABA and Glu, etc. In this application note the parallel analysis of all monoamines and metabolites are highlighted with detection limits as low as 0.2 fmol (on column).
Analysis of Benzalkonium Chloride by HPLC
Xu Qun, Li Lang, and Jeffrey Rohrer, Dionex Corporation

In this note, the lab uses eye drops and sterile elastic strips to show that the Dionex Acclaim Surfactant column and an UltiMate 3000 system can determine both the quantity and the polymeric distribution of benzalkonium chloride in a consumer product.
Dyes in Foods and Beverages
Suparerk Tukkeeree and Jeffrey Rohrer, Dionex Corporation

This note shows the fast (< 5 min) analysis of 10 dyes on a Dionex high-quality polar-embedded reversed-phase column. This fast separation is applicable to accurate dye determinations in beverages and a red gelatin sample. This method can also be transferred to an Acclaim RSLC column to get the separation time to less than 2.5 minutes.
A Flexible SPE/LC/MS/MS Platform for the Simultaneous Quantitation of Multiple Amyloid Peptides in Cerebrospinal Fluid
Mary E. Lame, Erin E. Chambers, and Diane M. Diehl, Waters Corporation

Fast, flexible platforms for peptide quantification are needed, particularly for a discovery setting. This type of methodology would be especially advantageous in the case of amyloid beta (aß) peptides.
Hyaluronic acide analysis with multi-angle light scattering
Wyatt Technology

HA’s therapeutic effectiveness depends critically on molecular weight: the higher the molecular weight, the longer its benefit.

Sulfur and halide determination by combustion ion chromatography
Christian Emmenegger, Andrea Wille and Alfred Steinbach, Metrohm International Headquarters

The article describes a highly efficient combustion ion chromatography system (CIC) that is used for the simultaneous trace-level determination of halogens and sulfur in liquid and solid combustible samples. Results obtained from the analysis of a polymer standard as well as a S-benzyl thiouronium chloride and four different fuel samples are presented.
