Poor body image in children and adolescents is associated with disordered eating and other maladaptive behaviors that place them at increased risk for a number of physical and psychologic problems. Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States affecting 1 in 6 children nationwide. School-based Body Mass Index (BMI) surveillance and screening programs have been implemented in some states in order to help stop and hopefully reverse this worrisome trend. Although there are potential benefits to such programs, some experts believe the jury remains out as to whether they actually change outcomes.
