Treating complaints of continuing urgency following surgery
After completion of this interactive case involving a patient with overactive bladder (OAB) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) who complains of continued urgency after transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) participants should be better able to describe the pathophysiology of OAB, including differences between men and women, and its relevance to clinical management strategies; identify effective and sensitive communication strategies to discuss OAB with patients; develop a clinically feasible screening process for OAB based on identified risk factors; describe the diagnostic process for OAB, including appropriate criteria for specialty testing; identify key conclusions regarding benefits and limitations of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies in OAB based on current evidence; set appropriate treatment goals in OAB and assess response using a validated instrument; integrate appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies based on individualized risk-benefit analysis; and develop appropriate follow-up plans, including assessment of treatment adherence.
