Amblyopia (Pediatrics) (American College of Physicians PIER)
Amblyopia is the most common cause of uncorrectable vision loss in children. Within a critical time period, amblyopia is a reversible state that occurs as a result of impaired visual development within central visual pathways and is not attributable to anatomic abnormalities or optic nerve pathology.
Incorporate age-appropriate eye and vision evaluations into routine well-child visits starting in early infancy. Start formal visual acuity testing at 3 years of age. Use history and physical exam findings to diagnose amblyopia. Investigate any suspicion from parents, teachers, or other observers who report visual difficulty in a child. Do simple maneuvers to look for evidence of amlyogenic conditions. Consider the multiple conditions that can lead to amblyopia.
Refer any child with abnormal amblyopia screening test results or a risk factor for amblyopia to an ophthalmologist.
