Bronchiolitis (American College of Physicians PIER)
There is strong evidence that environmental tobacco smoke makes bronchiolitis episodes more likely, more severe, and longer lasting. Identifying exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke and instituting measures to eliminate or reduce this exposure are among the preventive steps recommended to reduce the risk of bronchiolitis and its sequelae.

Besides identifying children at increased risk for bronchiolitis and for morbidity from bronchiolitis, other preventive steps are to initiate measures to reduce transmission of infection; to administer influenza vaccine to all young children, children with chronic illness, and their household contacts; to promote breastfeeding through the first year of life; and during the first two years of life, to provide palivizumab to premature infants and infants with significant lung or heart disease.

In addition to prevention, this activity covers diagnosis (on the basis of history and physical exam alone, noting that diagnostic testing is rarely indicated), consultation for diagnosis if the clinical presentation is atypical, hospitalization, non-drug therapy and drug therapy (concentrating on airway patency and providing other supportive care, avoiding unnecessary use of drugs), patient education, consultation for management, and follow-up. » Go to this activity
