Managing Complexities of Care in Children and Adolescents with ADHD
Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common condition diagnosed in more than 4.5 million children between the ages of 5 and 17 years, suboptimal diagnosis and treatment continue to be problems. Delays in diagnosis and optimal treatment may contribute to impaired functional status and challenges in school and social settings. Barriers to the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of ADHD include a lack of objective diagnostic tests and the stigma associated with the condition.
This activity begins with a podcast introducing a roundtable discussion among leading ADHD experts that complements an article published as a supplement to Contemporary Pediatrics. Upon completion, participants should be able to discuss prevalence and treatment rates of ADHD in children and adolescents; apply appropriate techniques to screen and evaluate children and adolescents for ADHD in primary care and school settings; describe treatment approaches for ADHD, including medication selection and monitoring, titration, behavioral interventions, follow-up, and referral; and identify comorbidities that commonly occur in children and adolescents with ADHD.
