Beyond Insulin: A New Target for Diabetes Management Based on Glucose Reabsorption
Adequate glycemic control in type 2 diabetes continues to remain a clinical challenge. Tight glycemic control is achievable with current regimens; however, it is often associated with treatment-related side effects such as hypoglycemia and weight gain, which negatively affect treatment and guideline adherence. There exists a need for newer treatment options with improved tolerability profiles, while achieving target levels of HBA1c. Reduction of glucose reabsorption in the kidney by renal sodium-glucose transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors is a novel approach to treating diabetes. This activity will focus on reviewing the role of SGLT2 inhibitors in the treatment and management of patients with diabetes.
Upon completion, participants should be able to explain the role of the kidney in the management of blood glucose levels; review how transport proteins in the kidney, including SGLT2, impact glucose reabsorption; explain the mechanism of action of SGLT2 inhibitors and compare it with other currently available treatment modalities; review recent data exploring the potential use of these agents in the management of diabetes; and discuss how our understanding of emerging treatment modalities is evolving and what this may mean for the clinician treating diabetics.
