Preventing End-Organ Damage in Patients with Hypertension
Most hypertensive patients, particularly those with diabetes, stage 2 hypertension, or coronary heart disease, are at a high risk for end-organ damage and cardiovascular events. Clinical trial data suggest that the risk of vascular events is significantly influenced by the time taken to achieve BP control. Early optimal management of blood pressure, therefore, is essential for maximizing cardiovascular protection.
Upon completion of this video-based activity, participants should be able to discuss clinical evidence supporting aggressive management of hypertension, and its impact on minimizing end-organ damage risk, and to briefly discuss the role of BP load on end-organ damage risk and review the evidence supporting appropriate BP assessment methods in the office and at home.

Essential Hypertension (American College of Physicians PIER)
Once hypertension develops, it rarely can be cured; thus the goal is to prevent or delay its development. Given the remarkable decrease in stroke and heart failure with modest BP reduction, small reductions in BP from weight loss and sodium intake reduction have large benefits in the overall population. This activity reviews hypertension prevention, screening, diagnosis, consultation for diagnosis, hospitalization, drug and non-drug therapy, patient education, consultation for management, and follow-up. » Go to this activity |
