A new patient being evaluated for potential LASIK surgery
A patient to be evaluated for potential LASIK surgery notes that she experiences some dryness and irritation in both eyes. She has been using daily-wear contact lenses for the past 17 years. Numerous studies have shown decreased tear secretion and tear film stability following corneal refractive surgery; in fact, dry eye syndrome is the most common complaint following LASIK surgery, and it has been linked to post-LASIK refractive regression. Therefore, it is important to evaluate and appropriately treat existing dry eye and irritation symptoms before considering this type of procedure.

Upon completion of this interactive session, participants should be able to weigh the risks and benefits of currently approved and late-stage pipeline agents used for the treatment of dry eye, and construct models to help improve patient care based upon the potential role of these, and be able to evaluate the importance of treating dry eye both before and after cataract and refractive surgery. » Go to this activity
