Acute Viral Conjunctivitis (American College of Physicians PIER)
Although most conjunctivitis can be diagnosed on history and physical examination as infectious, the nature of the infectious agent, a virus or bacteria, is often difficult to determine. Adenovirus is the most common cause of conjunctivitis and represents about 80% to 90% of all viral conjunctivitis.
Whether caused by adenoviruses or picornaviruses, conjunctivitis is highly contagious. Any patient with atypical presentation of conjunctivitis should be treated by a specialist. This activity includes guidance on history and physical examination and on laboratory and other studies, along with differential diagnosis and drug treatment of acute viral conjunctivitis.
