Osteoporosis: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment in Postmenopausal Women
"Despite substantial advances in the past ten years, most patients with osteoporotic fractures are still not being treated for the underlying bony cause of the fracture," says one researcher in therapy for osteoporosis.
Clear guidelines on the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis exist; however, millions of Americans still suffer osteoporosis-related fractures each year. Clinicians must not only know the guidelines for assessment of at-risk patients, but also implement these standards of care in their practices. It is also imperative that clinicians can assimilate the latest clinical trial data on combination therapies into an overall pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment plan.
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
• Assess all postmenopausal women for the risks of developing osteoporosis using the current NOF guidelines and the WHO FRAX™ algorithm
• Describe the role of bone quality in the risk of fracture to improve bone quality throughout targeted treatment
• Compare the benefits and risks of the available pharmacological agents when developing a multifactorial treatment plan for postmenopausal women at increased risk for developing osteoporosis.

Clinical Challenges in the Management and Treatment of Osteoporosis
This webinar features five case presentations focused on clinically-challenging situations involving osteoporosis, looking at diagnosis and prevention, treatment decisions, and long-term patient management.
Upon completion, participants will be able to evaluate the importance of specific risks factors such as age, gender, and race on the overall development of osteoporosis; discuss the impact of low vitamin D levels in patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis; develop strategies to combat common reasons for nonadherence to bisphosphonate therapy; and determine specific circumstances where a drug holiday may or may not be appropriate in patients being treated for osteoporosis for more than five years.
